Nicholas Grimshaw has a philosophy about architecture - buildings should be rigorously engineered machines that respond to the people who live in them. Since 1967, the celebrated British architect has redeemed the postwar aesthetic of many European cities with his work.
In the Western Morning News building, near Plymouth, Grimshaw presents the illusion of a noble vessel permaanently anchored to the English countryside.
"My architecture is a balancing act," he says, "on the tightrope between structural engineering and art."
